Electro-Winning

10 posts in this topic

Electro-winning is used commercially by large mining companies which employ carbon to capture gold out of cyanide solutions. Cyanide leaches the gold and silver out of the ore into a water solution. The gold bearing solution is put through a bed of activated carbon which captures the precious metals.

once the carbon is loaded up with the maximum amount of metal it can hold, the gold and silver are stripped off the carbon in a controlled chemical circuit and put into a more concentrated solution (the cleaned carbon is then recycled to capture more gold), then electro-winning is used to capture the gold and any silver out of the concentrated solution.

The anode that captures the gold is normally made of steel wool to give a maximum surface area. The iron of the steel goes into the solution during the process and the gold and silver come out. The gold, silver and left over iron are melted and a bar of gold-silver dore are poured and sent to a refiner.

The process is technically "electrorefining".

Electro-winning is a recovery process and not a refining process.

There are many references on the subject.

No, not really.

As you yourself said immediately afterward, Electro-winning is a recovery process and not a refining process.

You seem to be contradicting yourself by saying first that electrowinning is an electrorefining process, and then in the same breath saying it is not a refining process. That makes no sense.

Electro-winning, normally a "recovery process", can be used as a final method that will recover fine gold. The issue for many miners is the loss of fine gold. Fine gold becomes increasing difficult to recover by gravity methods including panning and many times is lost in clean up of concentrates.

Micron and sub micron gold can be dissolved into the appropriate "bath" and recovered by plating the gold onto a cathode.

Electro-winning is a process to recover gold from solutions like gold bearing cyanide solutions. Its not a refining process as the result of electrowinning will have gold, silver, copper, some leftover iron and possibly other elements - an impure dore product which must be further processed if a miner desires to refine his metals.
