    Hello All

Nice job on the trommel. How fast are you turning that drum?
  2. Hi, I've been in a few camps that used the portable fabric structures. They worked very well. When Full Metals had a prospecting camp here they used the WeatherPort structures. I was impressed how well they withstood the winter cold & snow without damage for years. The only problem I saw was it is very easy for bears to rip open a side for access! This happened to their cook structure.
  3. Carter, The State probably will not be too much of a problem. Google earth, Bing satellite, or Flash Earth might help you out. Or just send what summer photo you do have. The COE is another matter, they are wanting more detailed imagery for doing the JD. You might want to call them and see what they will accept as a minimum. I purchased a drone for just this purpose.

Yes I am. Cleared out a spot last Fall. Not going to start on it until mid Feb. Don't anticipate it being much more than 15'. Thanks but I like it keep it simple. Bucket and hand-crank windlass suits me fine for what I do. Good exercise going up and down the ladder !

Kurt, Yes I've hit some real good pay at times. Keep in mind none of my sinking has been near the depth your doing. I'd say my average shaft was less than 20'. I just used a 5 gallon bucket and rope. Never bothered putting up a windlass until it was at least 20'. That's changing though with age. Pulling up a 5 gallon bucket full of wet slop ain't as easy as it use to be !

Kurt, I like the electric jack hammer idea ! I sink holes for prospecting. Never did any serious drifting in any of them. Over the past 40 winters I've been here in the Fortymile I have probably sank close to a hundred holes on various creeks in the area. Here is one I was working on a couple years ago. This one ended up being abt 26' to bedrock.

Are you planning to pick through 60' of muck !?! That is my least favorite part of winter shaft sinking. Fortunately I only have had to deal with 10-12' of muck at most so far.

Kurt... Much muck before you hit gravel ?

    Thank You Chickenminer

Ouch... sounds painful ! We've all done some pretty stupid things from time to time in hindsight. Luckily most of us are still around !! I look forward to seeing some video of that machine in action next summer !

    Thank You Chickenminer

Hey .... good for you! Looks good and ought to do the job. Turning a bit faster than I like but I'm sure you will be tweaking that once you figure out how your material handles. Congrats !

    Gold Prospecting Drone

Bob... Curious how much control you have over the GoPro using the Yuneec controller ?

    Post Link?

I don't use Photobucket but I believe somewhere on the page of your video you will have options for linking code. One option will be called direct. Copy that and in the forum here use the advanced reply. One of the options in the toolbar at top is "image" , click that and it will open a box for you to insert your direct link from Photobucket. That should work. Make sure you have sharing enabled for that video in your Photobucket account !

    Dredgeing In Az

diggingbar..... Excellent posts. The more layers of bureaucratic rules, regulations and stipulations open to interpretation the further we become removed from the intent of the law. You are absolutely correct it is not some low lying BLM employees job to tell you how to mine. According to law their job is to issue you a permit ( if warranted) and then see to it that you follow that permit so as to not cause "undue or unnecessary degradation" to the public lands... period! Trouble is it is an exhausting fight every day every step of the way to prevail. It is refreshing to read yours and Clay's posts.
  16. Mike... MSHA says you are required to having training even if you are a single owner/operator with no employees. You would need the Surface training only. If you have never had any training, you would need the "new miner" 2-day class. After that it is an 8 hour refresher class yearly. Not sure where you are located but there are MSHA classes offered quite often. Yes, many guys try and stay under the radar and ignore the requirement. I would suggest if you can to take the class.

    Storing Items On Mining Claim

That is a key part. Dan didn't give us much to go on here. By "store my equipment" I am assuming it is more than a shovel and gold pan. What exactly ? It also appears Dan does not have a Notice or Plan on file. So I question why is he bringing "equipment" on to the claim before filing for permits. Too many unknowns here it seems to me. While I have no experience with USFS, I have years of experience with BLM.
  18. Good luck with the prospect Peter ! Look forward to hearing how it progresses.

    Rock Assay Samples

I'm curious, what is a "certified" lab anyway ? One would expect it to mean they have to meet certain standards and are monitored, but terms can be used loosely. Also, does it mean the same across borders ?
  20. Have a friend that was working old tailings this summer. He ended up with a lot of gold that is covered with mercury. He plans to retort the fines and send to refinery. He is trying to clean up the coarser stuff, +14 mesh, so he can sell direct to customers. He is using Nitric acid, fresh 70% solution. Problem he is having is the nitric doesn't seem to be dissolving the mercury coating very well. He has had it in solution for 3 days now. Question is ... I know acids work better when heated, but does the reaction slow down that much when an acid is cool ? He has this outside in 20 to 30 degree temps.

    Cleaning Contaminated Gold

JR, Sure it's still useable, so save it. There are ways to "drop" the mercury out of the nitric solution. I won't go into it here but you can do a little research and find out how. Be sure to store it safely and out of reach.

    Cleaning Contaminated Gold

JR, The nitric was a 70% solution. The first batch we did I diluted it 2:1. Seems to work fine when it's warm. With this colder wx I used it straight and it is taking a long time to react. Eventually it cleans it up. I know what you mean on the retorted gold. My experience is the same. End result was always a dirty looking clump of gold. I never tried nitric on a batch after retorting because it was going to the refinery anyway. So far very good results using the nitric and ending up with nice bright colored gold. Second batch of cleaned gold +14 mesh Be extremely careful when working with an acid !! Wear those rubber gloves, do it outside and stay upwind of the fumes produced. Anytime I work with this stuff or the retort I burn one of those mosquito coils so I can constantly watch the wind direction.

    Cleaning Contaminated Gold

Chris.. That's a good idea. I could set it in a type of solar cooker. Not too much power in the sun anymore but I bet it would raise it 20 degrees or better. Dang, I didn't realize nitric froze at -43 ! I wonder if it'll freeze hard enough at -60 to break the glass bottle? Hmmm... might have to bury the bottle for the winter.

    Cleaning Contaminated Gold

Harry, I don't know. Depends on the impurities I would think. At this time I am not seeing that, but again with the slow reaction time of cool acid it seems to be cleaning well with minimal impact to the physical characteristics of the gold. I'll post some after pics when I get the next batch cleaned and neutralized. Here is first batch all cleaned.
