Intimidation by federal agencies against miners has been going on for decades and its ridiculous. While I can't fault them for carrying some kind of protection while traversing the remote edges of Alaska there tactics are obviously over the top.

The Alaska Environmental Crimes Task Force?

Wow. I can just imagine the miner in his fedora with a Tommy gun - "I'm muddying the water, dirty rotten coppers, and you ain't going to stop me! You try, I'm taken you all with me!" Blam! Blam! Blam! Blam! Blam! Blam!

They are supposed to be there taking water quality samples, for gosh sake. Since when does that take guns and body armor?

Problem is like everywhere drug labs are hiding on claims. Mobile labs have been busted on my claims here in shasta county 3 times, coffee creek dozens, bonanza creek 20+ 55 gallon barrels of toxic drug waste,we just had 125 cops,3 helos bust 23 illegal grows and over half had drug labs producing powdered death at the same time. I am not surprised a bit. As usual the honest miner caught in the middle sic sic sic here in trinity/shasta counties the FS personel won't go and even service campgrounds without armed escorts-the drug wars are ON all over the US as cartels move in every state  -John

John,

With all due respect, drug labs are not hiding on mining claims "everywhere".

We are not guilty until proven innocent. With no prior history of any such activities

in the mining district, the use of such tactics was totally uncalled for.

The use of such tactics by federal officials only has the potential to create the very

conflicts we try to avoid.

With all due respect John, human trafficking and drug labs in Chicken was a ludicrous excuse to show such force while checking water quality. I agree there is crime everywhere, but there are simply not enough people for the human trafficking trade. Chicken, even on the Taylor highway, is just  too remote for a drug lab. It would be possible, but a bad decision business wise. I don't think those guys are all dumb. There would be much better isolated places nearer population centers (markets for illegal drugs) such as....northern California.

 John,

I don't believe a word of that post. None of it makes sense. Did the guy file a report with the Troopers?

If not, why ? If he did, give me a date and I'll look it up.

I'll bet there is a whole lot more to that story!

Human trafficking in Alaska?

Here's the stats... In 2012 nationwide over 20,000 cases. Alaska had 22.

- Geowizard

Thanks.Human trafficking sounded pretty hard to imagine. Gas is probably more valuable in the area. I am not an Expert on Alaska, but I have spent a few months around Chicken and Forty Mile.

so was it all on federal claims or any state claims? Seams like people should have privacy rights/trespassing? In the newsminer article it said the state troopers didn't know anything about the "human trafficking or drugs of any kind in chicken". I hope the state officials straighten this out.

Hi Carter,

No it was not limited in scope. EPA "inspected" state, federal and private claims. All under the guise of enforcing section 404 of the

Clean Water Act.

Nothing has been "straightened out". We are still waiting for the Governor's special task force to publish its findings.
