In places like Nevada or Arizona, you may have reasonable road access and not too far a drive to any standard supplies. In Alaska, you may need to fly in everything. I've often daydreamed about the goldrushers of 1849 California or the Corps Of Discovery in 1804. History is full of the stories of adventure.
