 Miners working a bench along the Fortymile river, just below the mouth of Smith creek, had to  

use a ditch and then a flume to carry the water from one side of the river to the other.

 Quite an engineering feat with shovels, axes and whipsaws !

Dick - that's amazing.

I know that in California they built ditches that ran for many miles to deliver water under a hundred feet of head or more to the big hydraulic mines in the 1800s. These things would cost more than a hundred thousand dollars to construct - that was back in the day when $100,000 was significant money.
